A better question would be, “Why do we observe Memorial Day?” because celebration seems a bit odd in light of the holiday’s purpose.

On the last Monday in May, we take time to remember those members of the military who died in service to their country.  Originally, Memorial Day commemorated only those who died during the Civil War but after World War I it became a holiday to remember those who died during any war.  For many of us, this three-day weekend marks the start of summer and is marked by high spirits, good food, fun in the sun and maybe indulgence of some liquid spirits with friends and family.

As you enjoy this time of fun and relaxation, please remember those who make it possible.  Thank you to all who serve in our military and to your families as well.  May you all be together this time next year.
